Cisco Aironet 2702i Wireless Access Point (AIR-CAP2702I-Z-K9)

A dual-band 802.11ac Wave 1 access point with 3x4 MIMO and three spatial streams, rated up to 1.3 Gbps on 5 GHz. This is a controller-based unit — a Cisco wireless LAN controller is required.

Key Benefits

  • 802.11ac Wave 1: a genuine step up from 802.11n, with rated PHY rates to 1.3 Gbps on 5 GHz and 450 Mbps on 2.4 GHz.
  • 3x4 MIMO, three spatial streams: four receive chains against three transmit streams improves reliability at the edge of coverage, not just raw speed.
  • Transmit beamforming: focuses signal toward the client rather than radiating evenly, which lifts throughput for devices further from the unit.
  • Four internal dual-band antennas: no external aerials to align or break, suited to ceiling mounting in offices and classrooms.
  • Dual Gigabit Ethernet: two 10/100/1000 ports for the wired uplink.
  • Enterprise managed: configured and monitored centrally through a Cisco controller alongside the rest of the wireless estate.

Performance in Use

The 2700 series was Cisco's mainstream 802.11ac Wave 1 access point and it remains a sensible workhorse in estates already built around Cisco controllers. Three spatial streams and 3x4 MIMO deliver solid real-world throughput for laptops, tablets and phones in a normal office or classroom density.

Transmit beamforming and four receive chains are what separate an enterprise access point from a consumer one. Rather than simply broadcasting harder, the unit shapes its signal toward each client and listens on more chains than it transmits, which improves the experience for devices at the far edge of a cell — typically where users complain.

As with the rest of the CAP range, this is a controller-based access point and needs a Cisco wireless LAN controller to operate. It will not run standalone or work plugged into a broadband router. Power is PoE+, so check your switch supplies more than basic 802.3af on the port you intend to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this without a Cisco controller?

No. This is a controller-based access point and requires a Cisco wireless LAN controller. It will not work standalone or on a home router.

What power does it need?

It uses PoE+ or enhanced PoE. A switch port supplying only basic 802.3af may not run it at full capability.

How fast is it?

It is 802.11ac Wave 1 with rated PHY rates up to 1.3 Gbps on 5 GHz and 450 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. Real-world throughput is lower.

Are the antennas internal?

Yes, it has four internal dual-band antennas. This is the "i" variant.

Is a mounting bracket included?

Brackets and mounting hardware are not included unless stated.

Does it support Wi-Fi 6?

No. It is an 802.11ac Wave 1 device.

What are the shipping costs?

Shipping costs apply based on size and destination — rates are calculated at checkout.
